I nte rvie ws m a y be useful as follow-up t o certain respondents t o questionnaires, e.g., to further investigate their responses. (McNam ara ,1999) Aspects of Qualitative Research Interviews. ƒ Interv iews are completed by the interviewer based on what the respondent sa ys. ƒ Interv iews are a far more personal form of resear ch than questionnaires. ƒ In the personal intervie w, the interviewer work s directly with the respondent. ƒ Unlike with mail surv eys, the interv iewer has the opportunity to pro b e or ask follow up questions. ƒ Interv iews are generally ea sier for respondent , especi ally if wha t is sought is opinions or impressions. ƒ Interv iews are time consumin g and they are resource int e nsive. ƒ The interv iewer is considered a part o f the meas ur e m en t in strume nt an d interv iewer has to well trained in how t o respond to a ny cont ingency. Types of Interviews ƒ Informal, conv e rsational interview -no predet ermined qu estions are asked, in order to rem a in as open an d ad aptable as po ssible to the interv iewee’s nature and prio rities; d uring the in te rv ie w the interviewer “goes with t he flow” . ƒ General intervie w guide approach -the guide approach is intended to ensure t ha t the sam e general area s of information are collect ed from each interviewee; this prov ides more focus than the convers a tional approach, but sti ll al lo ws a degree of freedom and ada p ta bility in get ting the information from the int e rviewee.
